The pilot use of solar PV on heritage state buildings is underway.

Singapore’s Energy Market Authority (EMA) and Swiss research and technology centre CSEM signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to jointly research and develop solar energy technologies during the Singapore International Energy Week.

This is part of EMA’s efforts to develop and harness solar energy in partnership with the private and public sectors.

The MOU covers several areas of cooperation, including solar photovoltaic (PV) and grid-integration research and exchange, assessment of solar technologies, and identification of pilot projects to validate, share, scale up and commercialise these technologies.

EMA will also collaborate with CSEM and the Singapore Land Authority (SLA) to pilot the use of solar PV roof tiles on heritage state buildings in the country.

Resembling traditional clay roof tiles, the solar PV tiles will generate clean electricity whilst retaining the appearance and historical character of these buildings.

“Together, we aim to secure the energy transition by accelerating solar deployment and grid integration in Singapore whilst creating opportunities for Swiss PV and grid-management solutions,” said Tonio Buonassisi, CSEM vice president of sustainable energy.
