Under the direction of the Guardian of the Two Holy Sites, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and His Royal Highness Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud, the Saudi Fund for Development (SFD) recently signed on behalf of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia a multi-year contribution agreement worth US$39 million with the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. The grant will support the fight to end the global pandemic and strengthen health and community systems.
The contract was signed by His Eminence Sultan Al-Marshad and CEO of the Saudi Fund for Development and Peter Sands, Executive Director of the Global Fund in the presence of His Eminence Ambassador Abdulmohsen bin Khothaila and Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia the United Nations, signed in Geneva.
Announced during the Global Fund’s 7th Supplement, which represented a significant increase of 30% over the previous conference, this contract now strengthens Saudi Arabia’s contribution as the Global Fund’s 19th largest donor. Having already pledged US$162 million and contributed US$123 million since 2003, the Kingdom continues to secure the necessary funding for resources and tools to combat these infectious diseases.
Peter Sands, Executive Director of the Global Fund, said: “We are grateful for the generous support of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia over the past 20 years. The signing of this agreement will ensure that the Global Fund can continue to fund and support programs aimed at bringing prevention, treatment and care to people living with HIV, tuberculosis or malaria in more than 100 countries around the world. This contract demonstrates the special importance of our partnership with the Saudi Fund for Development and sets the stage for even greater collaboration in the years to come.”
Sultan Al-Marshad, CEO of the Saudi Fund for Development, said: “Our task today is to deliver in a timely manner, but it is also essential given the health challenges the world is currently facing, especially in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. These circumstances underscore the need for a strong and resilient global health system. Because of these challenges, the Kingdom and its government strive to support global health initiatives and promote long-term equitable development while always protecting people’s health. By targeting diseases such as AIDS and malaria, we aim to help improve the lives of countless people and communities.”
