If you take a good look at the modern business landscape, you’ll conclude, at first glance, that everything looks rather normal and functional. Offices are sleek, people are continuously making video calls, and everybody looks pretty productive and effective.

Even though this will make you think that issues are non-existent, the truth is that a lot of people are dealing with one particular problem, which has become quite common in recent years, and that is a knee issue.

This is particularly the situation in organizations where people are in a sedentary position almost the entire time, which isn’t only detrimental for their knees, but the entire body, as well, and that’s something many people aren’t aware of, or they tend to overlook this fact.

The Correlation Between Knees & Sitting

As stated above, seemingly everything looks fine, like the damage isn’t done, because, after all, your knees aren’t under any restraint; they are actually quite relaxed because they aren’t forced to do any running, and/or heavy lifting.

But that doesn’t instantly mean that there’s nothing wrong with this position. Namely, when a person is sitting for a very long time, it impacts circulation (in a negative way), increases joint stiffness, and tightens surrounding muscles.

If this persists, then other parts of your body, like your lower back, hips, and ankles, will suffer, too! Consequently, if you experience something like this, then be sure to go to a knee specialist who’s going to help you restore knee mobility because that’s probably taken away from you now. But don’t worry, with the right professional by your side, this problem can easily be fixed.

In a nutshell, what you need to understand is that the main issue isn’t sitting itself, but the combination of consistent sitting and lack of overall mobility.

And Then There’s Muscle Weakness

What needs to be emphasized is the fact that knees hardly ever work alone. They are heavily reliant on the muscles that surround them, especially the glutes, hamstrings, quadriceps, and calves.

When you are sitting all the time, then as time goes by, these muscles start to become weaker because they simply aren’t employed enough. When muscles are weak, they do not provide as good support as the ones that are strong.

Basically, almost every activity becomes challenging, including standing up, climbing, or even walking for a certain amount of time, which can be extremely frustrating. Then you are stuck in a vicious cycle because you’re afraid to move because you do not feel stable and comfortable, which will further weaken your knees.

The Importance Of Posture And Workspace Design

It’s safe to say that a lot of problems that are linked with knees aren’t solely caused by inactivity, but also by the workstation setup and your posture. Chairs that are positioned too low or too high can put a lot of pressure on your knees.

If you sit with legs tucked in a strange position (such as beneath the chair), then you’ll feel uncomfortable, as well! Ergonomics is frequently brought up when the topic related to back and neck pain is discussed, but that doesn’t change the fact that knees play a significant role, too!

That’s exactly why it would be advisable if you made certain tweaks that may not be huge, but are definitely impactful:

  • Keeping your feet flat on the floor
  • Not being in static positions for too long
  • Making use of chars that support natural posture

Weight & Decreased Activity

It is widely known that sedentary work can significantly influence knee health, not in a good way, through changes in overall activity and weight management. Your knees bear major force movement, particularly when you’re taking a walk, climbing stairs, etc.

And if you’re by any chance overweight, then this makes things much harder because you are practically carrying an additional load. When you combine that with muscle weakness, the result you get is additional stress on cartilage, along with connective tissues.

Although all of this may sound a bit scary, you should keep in mind that this doesn’t instantly mean that every person who sits a lot is going to develop knee issues at some point; however, you are surely at a greater risk of that, especially if this becomes your habit.

Sadly, this isn’t a topic that is discussed a lot; however, as you can see, it is very impactful when it comes to the health of your knees, hence it would be wise to do something about it before things escalate.
