In general, it’s a very good idea to try and update your Mac OS to the latest version. But sometimes, it just doesn’t work like that. If you have an older device, chances are that you don’t have the option to upgrade anymore. And the only thing that you can do is to keep the latest version that you can update to. Here you will learn how to check if you have access to the latest Mac OS or not.
What do you need for the latest Mac OS version?
At the time of this writing, the latest version is Sequoia and for that you need to have an iMac 2019 or newer, Mac Studio 2022, Mac Mini 2018 or newer, Mac Pro 2019 or newer, iMac Pro 2017 and newer, MacBook Air 2020 or later and MacBook Pro 2018 or later.
Basically, if your device is older, then you will not be able to use the latest Mac OS version. And every time a new Mac OS version appears, they tend to require a newer device all the time. Which is why you have to figure out when and how these requirements appear, and be up to date with them. But a good rule of thumb is to have a Mac that’s at most 6-7 years old. Because if it’s older, chances are that Mac OS requirements might be more than what it can deliver.
Do you really need to update to the latest Mac OS?
It depends on what you want. But there are upsides when it comes to updating to the latest Mac OS. One upside is that you have very good app compatibility, as most apps are updated for the latest Mac OS version. There are also performance upgrades that you can take advantage of, which is a major plus. Additionally, you can access new features, and you will also have better integration with the Apple ecosystem and the various features that you can access here.
Are there downsides? Before you learn how to check it and upgrade, you have to understand that you will lose support for legacy apps a lot of the time. There could also be driver issues, and performance-related concerns if your device is on the older side. That’s why you must do a compatibility check, just to be on the safe side. It helps immensely, and it will give you the much-needed results that you are looking for.
How can you update the old MacBook?
Enter the System Settings, and in there you want to go to General/Software Update. Here, you want to see whether there is an update available or not. And then all you have to do is to download the update and you will be good to go. It will install everything you need, thus making your experience rather seamless and very easy to manage, which is always a major plus.
If your Mac is not supported by the latest Mac OS, that doesn’t mean it’s the end of the world. You can keep the last supported Mac OS version for a while. And just because Apple doesn’t offer support doesn’t mean it will not run that latest version. It’s just not going to be supported by Apple, and the results will vary. You might also run into compatibility problems, which is a problem if you want to professionally use the device for various use cases.
In case you have an unsupported Mac, you can use the following tips:
- Create a backup of your Mac first, just to be on the safe side
- On the supported Mac, launch the Mac App Store and then search for the OS. Download it and when it launches, quit it.

- Select the option to erase, give it a name and format it MacOS Extended.
- Download the Open Core Legacy patcher.
- When the USB stick is connected to the Mac, open the Open Core Legacy patcher and choose Build OpenCore.
- Follow all the guidelines and then you will create a bootable installer on the USB stick.
- Unplug it from the supported Mac and go to the unsupported one. Restart that Mac while holding the Option key down.
- Choose the USB stick as the boot volume.

It’s never easy to try and install Mac OS on an unsupported device. But it’s not impossible. And in many cases, especially if you had some RAM or SSD upgrades, the new OS could run without issues. Apple still has its reservations and wants people to upgrade their devices. However, with a few changes here and there, you will be able to run even the latest OS without a problem.
